This creamy cottage cheese pasta sauce is a fresh, protein-packed twist on classic pesto, made with cottage cheese, spinach, basil, avocado and Parmesan. It comes together in just 10 minutes using simple ingredients and makes an easy, healthy weeknight dinner the whole family will love.

Cottage cheese pasta sauce with basil, spinach and parmesan

If you’re looking for an easy cottage cheese pasta sauce that’s creamy, fresh and packed with protein, this recipe might become your new favourite.

Inspired by classic basil pesto, I swapped most of the olive oil for cottage cheese and avocado to create a silky smooth sauce that’s lighter, higher in protein and still incredibly satisfying. Fresh basil and Parmesan give it that familiar pesto flavour, while spinach and lemon add freshness, colour and plenty of extra nutrition.

If you’re anything like me, you’ll probably have some cottage cheese, Parmesan and half a bag of spinach left after making this pasta. Rather than letting them sit in the fridge, use them to make my Cottage Cheese Egg Bake. It uses many of the same ingredients and makes an easy meal-prep breakfast or lunch, so your dinners and lunches are sorted for the next few days.

Why You'll Love This Recipe

  • Ready in just 10 minutes.
  • Packed with protein thanks to cottage cheese.
  • Creamy without using heavy cream or oil.
  • Fresh basil gives it a delicious pesto-inspired flavour. Something different from the usual tomato sauce-based cottage cheese pasta sauce.
  • A great way to eat more spinach without even noticing it.
  • Perfect for meal prep.
  • Easy to make in a food processor or blender.

A Meat-Free Meal That's Still High in Protein

One of my favourite things about this recipe is that it doesn’t need chicken or meat to be satisfying, and it’s still suitable for a high-protein diet.

If you make it with a high-protein pasta like Barilla Protein+ (US) or Vetta (Australia), you’re getting protein from both the pasta and the cottage cheese sauce. Depending on the type of pasta you choose, you’ll end up with around 30–35 grams of protein per serving, making it a filling vegetarian meal all on its own.

Of course, you can always add grilled chicken, salmon or tofu if you’d like even more protein, but I honestly don’t think this dish needs it. Sometimes it’s nice to give meat a break while still enjoying a balanced, protein-rich dinner.

Why This Recipe Works

Traditional pesto is delicious, but it relies heavily on olive oil for its rich texture. I wanted something just as creamy that also added more protein and a little more nutrition.

Instead of pouring in lots of oil or cream, cottage cheese and avocado create a naturally creamy high-protein pasta sauce while fresh spinach boosts the fibre, vitamins and minerals without overpowering the basil. Parmesan brings that savoury flavour you’d expect from pesto, while lemon brightens everything and helps keep the avocado looking fresher if you’re storing leftovers.

The result is a sauce that’s fresh, satisfying and surprisingly filling, making it a great option for busy weeknights.

Ingredients

Cottage Cheese

I tested this recipe using low-fat cottage cheese, but full-fat works beautifully too if you prefer an even creamier texture. Blending it creates a silky smooth sauce without needing heavy cream. Yes, you can use lactose-free cottage cheese and Parmesan cheese if you have lactose sensitivity.

Fresh Spinach

Fresh spinach works best here. I don’t recommend frozen spinach because it releases extra moisture and the sauce loses some of its bright, fresh flavour.

Fresh Basil

Fresh basil is what gives this sauce its pesto-inspired taste, so it’s well worth using the fresh leaves instead of dried basil.

A ripe banana blends more smoothly and adds natural sweetness, meaning you’ll need less added sweetener.

Avocado

The avocado creates an incredibly creamy texture while adding healthy fats and fibre. It also replaces much of the olive oil you’d normally find in traditional pesto.

Parmesan Cheese

Freshly grated Parmesan melts into the sauce much better than pre-shredded cheese and adds plenty of savoury flavour.

Lemon

The lemon became one of my favourite additions to this creamy pasta sauce. Besides adding freshness, it also helps slow the avocado from browning if you’re storing leftovers. As a bonus, the vitamin C also helps your body absorb the non-heme iron. Non-heme iron is iron found in plant-based sources including spinach, beans, and other vegetables. It’s typically harder to absorb by the body than iron from animal sources, but adding vitamin C helps with that.

How To Make Pesto-Style Cottage Cheese Pasta Sauce

Step 1: Blend the sauce

Add the cottage cheese, spinach, basil, avocado, Parmesan, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, pepper, lemon juice, and lemon zest to a food processor or blender.

Blend until completely smooth, stopping once or twice to scrape down the sides and push the spinach leaves back towards the blades if needed.

Step 2: Cook the pasta

Meanwhile, cook your favourite pasta according to the package instructions until al dente.

Before draining, reserve about ½ cup of the pasta water, just in case you decide you want the pasta sauce a little less thick.

Step 3: Toss everything together

Return the drained pasta to the same pot.

Pour the cottage cheese sauce over the hot pasta and gently toss over low-medium heat for 1–2 minutes until the sauce is warmed through.

If needed, add a splash of the reserved pasta water until the sauce reaches your preferred consistency. But if you are happy with a thicker sauce, then leave it as it is; the Parmesan will melt through the sauce, making it cheesy and delicious.

Step 4: Serve

Serve immediately with extra shaved Parmesan, fresh basil, cracked black pepper and toasted pine nuts if using.

My Recipe Testing Tips

My Recipe Testing Tips

Fresh spinach really does make a difference.
I chose fresh spinach because I wanted the sauce to taste bright and fresh. Frozen spinach releases more moisture, making the sauce thinner while muting some of the fresh basil flavour.

Don’t actually cook the sauce.
This is why this pasta sauce is so easy and only takes around 10 minutes to prepare. Once the sauce is blended, it only needs warming through with the hot pasta. Cooking it for too long softens the fresh basil flavour and dulls the bright green colour.

Lemon isn’t just there for flavour.
I originally added lemon to help prevent the avocado from browning in the fridge for leftovers or meal prep, but it ended up becoming one of my favourite parts of the recipe. It gives the whole sauce a fresh, zesty finish that beautifully balances the richness of the avocado and Parmesan.

Make it your own.
For an even more traditional pesto flavour, stir through a handful of toasted pine nuts before serving. They’re completely optional, but they add a lovely nutty crunch.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use frozen spinach?

I recommend fresh spinach for this recipe. Frozen spinach releases extra moisture, making the sauce thinner and reducing its fresh pesto-inspired flavour.

Can I use low-fat cottage cheese?

Yes! I actually tested this recipe using low-fat cottage cheese, and it turned out beautifully. Full-fat cottage cheese also works if you’d like an even creamier sauce.

Can I make this sauce ahead of time?

Yes. Store it in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. The lemon helps keep the avocado looking fresher, although a little natural darkening is completely normal.

Can I freeze cottage cheese pasta sauce?

Yes, you can freeze it in serving-sized batches in an airtight container for up to 6 months. You can even freeze it already mixed into the pasta, so you can have complete frozen meals ready to warm up in the microwave when you need a quick high-protein meal in hurry.

What's the best pasta to use?

Almost any pasta works well. I love using a higher-protein pasta for an extra protein boost like Barilla Protein+ if you are in US, or Vetta Pasta (High Protein version in Australia), but regular wheat pasta, wholemeal pasta and gluten-free pasta are all great options.

Can I add pine nuts?

Absolutely. Toasted pine nuts add a lovely crunch and make the sauce taste even closer to a traditional pesto.

Is this healthier than traditional pesto?

It depends on your goals, but if you’re looking for a higher-protein and lower fat option, this recipe is a great alternative. Cottage cheese adds significantly more protein than traditional pesto, while spinach contributes fibre, iron and vitamin A. The avocado provides healthy fats and creates a creamy texture without relying on lots of olive oil.

What can I make with leftover cottage cheese?

If you’ve still got cottage cheese in the fridge, my Cottage Cheese Flatbread is a quick lunch or snack that’s always a winner. If you also have spinach and Parmesan left over, try my Cottage Cheese Egg Bake for easy meal-prep breakfasts or lunches. And if you’ve got a little more time on the weekend, my Cottage Cheese Quiche is another delicious savoury recipe worth making.
